Review September 2021
Just finished Geoff Brookes’ ‘Our Lady of Mumbles’, the second in his three book series of Inspector Rumsey Bucke novels.
A decent man in the depraved world of late Victorian Swansea, Bucke teams up with a piano teacher to uncover the nefarious dealings of a fraudulent religious cult.
There is plenty of authentic period detail, convincing dialogue and strong characterisation as the action gathers pace impressively to a highly dramatic finale. I found myself racing to the end and, as you should do with any masterful genre novel, waiting impatiently for the next in the series.
One of the most impressive features of this book is the impeccably researched detail – of police procedure, the geography of the town and the quasi-religious discourse of the antagonist Father Milo. But ‘Our Lady of Mumbles’ is much better than simply a piece of history with a melodramatic plot; it’s a clever, engaging and thrilling detective novel. Very highly recommended.
